Jerry Springer, whose death rocked the entertainment industry, proved once again that he had a great sense of humor when he revealed the five words he wanted to be written on his tombstone.
His grieving family confirmed that he had passed away at the age of 79 following a battle with pancreatic cancer.
After the news of his demise, his spokesperson and close friend Jene Galvin said to TMZ that Springer had kept his cancer battle private – only informing his family and very close friends.
Galvin also said that the ‘Godfather of Reality TV’ did not want to worry others and just wanted to be with his loved ones during his final moments.
Best known for his hosting role on the Jerry Springer show, the performer once shared he wanted these five words etched on his tombstone: “I won’t be right back.”
The TV star, who briefly served as Mayor of Cincinnati, made the remark in 2018 interview with Entertainment Tonight.
During the 2018 interview in celebration of 25 years of his show, he also revealed why he had decided to continue working instead of retiring.
“I just do it because it’s fun to do, and I’m not that good at golf. I’m always afraid not to be working,” he said.
He also joked that he would still be around for the 50th anniversary of The Jerry Springer Show.
“25 years from now, I think I won’t be talkative. But if you just yell loudly (mimics yelling at the ground), ‘Jerry, what do you think!’”
Springer than revealed the five words he wanted to be written on his tombstone.
“I know what I’m gonna put on my tombstone. ‘I won’t be right back.’”
Springer tried to counsel guests on his show, always signing off with his popular line: “Take care of yourselves – and each other.”
