Madeleine McCann’s parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, have shared a heartbreaking message in honor of the 20th birthday of their missing daughter.
It was in 2007 when Maddie suddenly disappeared while on a family vacation in Praia da Luz, Portugal. Her parents were eating at a restaurant nearby when the little girl vanished.
Their story made headlines all around the world, with Portuguese and British authorities spending millions into trying to find the girl but she still remains missing.
Kate and Gerry have now spoken out to mark what would have been their daughter’s 20th birthday.
In a post on the Official Find Madeleine Campaign Facebook page, they wrote that they have not given up hope just yet.
“Happy birthday Madeleine!” Kate and Gerry said. “We love you and we’re waiting for you. we’re never going to give up.”
The message also included photos of their daughter.
In the caption, the parents added: “Madeleine McCann is 20-years-old today. She’s still missing, still missed and we are never going to give up trying to find her.”
This comes after Gerry and Kate issued a statement to mark the 16th anniversary of Maddie’s disappearance.
Released on the official Find Madeleine Campaign website on May 3, the parents wrote: “Today marks the 16th anniversary of Madeleine’s abduction. Still missing… still very much missed. It is hard to find the words to convey how we feel. The police investigation continues, and we await a breakthrough. Thank you to everyone for your support – it really helps.”
They also shared a poem titled The Contradiction by Clare Pollard.
Some parts of the verse read: “The absence contradicts itself: the missing conjures what we miss. I cannot hold you, yet I do: please let me hold you in my head and where you are now, hold me too.”
One person commented: “Happy Birthday little girl wherever you are. Hope your years have been peaceful knowing you were loved.”
Another said: “So sad hope someone finds her so long age 3 at the time without mommy or daddy.”
