A couple who wanted to give their baby a ‘banned name’ in the UK has won their battle after being stopped by a registrar numerous times.
Dan and Mandy Sheldon revealed that when they went to register their newborn son, the registrar looked at them in ‘utter disgust.’
Speaking to The Sun, Dan said: “We were really excited to go and get him registered but the woman looked at us in utter disgust.
“She told us he would never be able to get a job, and that teachers wouldn’t want to teach him.”
The parents said that they wanted to name their baby Lucifer.
“I tried to explain that we are not religious people, and Lucifer in Greek means ‘light-bringer’ and ‘morning’ but she wouldn’t listen,” the frustrated father went on.
Dan also said that the registrar told them it was illegal to give that name to a child in New Zealand.
The name is also not allowed in many countries that are predominantly Christian, including Switzerland and Germany.
“We were gobsmacked with her behavior,” Dan said, adding that they managed to win the battle in the end after the woman checked if the UK had similar laws.
“Eventually she did it, but it was through gritted teeth.”
“Honestly, we just thought it was a nice name… a unique one. We didn’t expect to get so much grief about it,” he added.
According to The Sun, Derbyshire County Council said: “We apologize if they were offended but it is the job of our registrars to advise in these matters as sometimes people are not aware of certain meanings or associations around certain names.”
